Fingerprint policies: distinct, population-safe and legacy
What each fingerprint policy changes, which one new profiles get, and why some hosts cannot use distinct.
Every profile has a fingerprint policy. It decides how the profile presents rendering, hardware and other surfaces that websites can read. The policy is set when the profile is created and shown read-only in the profile drawer under Fingerprint, Device identity.
Distinct is the default for new profiles since 20 October 2026. It varies text rendering (the canvas text and font-rendering hashes) per profile, so profiles on one Mac do not share those values. CPU, memory, screen, audio, WebGL and fonts stay native, matching stock Chrome on the same Mac.
Population-safe profiles share this computer's native rendering, audio, fonts, CPU and memory. They look like an ordinary browser on this machine, but profiles on one Mac can be linked through those shared surfaces.
Legacy applies only to profiles created before policies existed. Those profiles use seed-derived canvas, WebGL and audio noise, which detectors can classify as masking. New legacy profiles cannot be created.
- To create a distinct profile, keep Distinct rendering identity ticked in the new-profile panel. Untick it to create a population-safe profile instead.
- Distinct needs the Browz Chromium engine and an archetype of auto (match this machine) or macos, on a supported Mac with rendering identities left. When those conditions are not met, the profile is created as population-safe instead.
- The new-profile panel shows how many rendering identities are still unused on this Mac. An identity stays reserved after its profile is deleted, and a batch larger than what is left is refused.
- Distinct is assigned at creation. An existing profile cannot be switched to distinct later; create a new profile instead.
distinct-unsupported-host means this Mac reports a CPU thread count or memory size that the distinct policy is not qualified for. Create a population-safe profile on this Mac, or create the distinct profile on a supported Mac.
New fingerprint on every startup cannot be combined with distinct. The New fingerprint button re-seeds a profile and keeps its cookies.
